Residency at Artscape Gibraltar Point

Toronto, Ontario from October 12 - 18, 2021

In mid-October this year, we began our residency on Toronto Islands, Artscape Gibraltar Point. Arriving at the furthest point from the residency, we travelled back and forth from the ferry terminal regularly, sometimes on a pirate ferry, sometimes in a vintage bus!

We came to the residency to work on the collaborative performance we are planning to mount in the Spring of 2023. Working each day in the studio, we discussed themes, atmosphere, methods and settings. We each brought unique choreographic ideas to the table and developed the progression of forms, and environments.

We also made preparations for our community event, which we titled Folding Together. We prepared the beautiful “Fireplace” room, with seating, roaring fire, tables, tea and cookies and plenty of items to fold/unfold for our guests. On the day, we gave a short presentation of our project, and collected stories, memories, encounters and snippets of “care” as recalled by those who perform the labour of motherhood in our midst. These narratives will help us in creating audio and visual elements that we may incorporate into our final performance work. It was a beautiful event, only 50’ away from the beach on a sunny day. We are thankful for cooperative weather, the generosity of our guests and the fortune of receiving support from the Canada Council for the Arts and Arts Nova Scotia that made our event successful.
