In preliminary attempts to express embodied themes of motherhood, and the sensations of maternal care, I have been exploring two key themes in sculptural terms: Space and Scale

The first, Space – the relationship between mother and child transitions from enveloping (closeness) into moments of release (distance) and then recurs and flexes, back and forth, though gradually receding.

The second theme, Scale – sensations of rapidly changing bodies along with matters of concern between mother and child seems to alter quickly. That is, in as little time as a few seconds, monumental problems are resolved upon for example, finding the key item that had been lost in the yard. And alternatively insignificant details, such as the texture of a scarf become inflated to new, heightened proportions when viewed through the eyes of my child.

These two themes (space and scale) combine through works that take the form of extremely long arms with hands, currently fabricated at 1/5th scale (4cm hand). Using stop frame animation, I am working to portray sensations using these scaled arms through animated motions: reaching, anxiously waiting, holding on, gently releasing, hesitating, recurring. These animations are made with future layered projection in mind, they allow space from one side for live interaction in performance that could then be recorded/re-projected at different scales each time - the sensations increasing and decreasing with enlargement and reduction in scale.
